Rhode Island voters could see more political parties and a wider range of candidates if the General Assembly passes the bipartisan House Bill 7978 that would make it less onerous for third parties and their candidates to get onto the ballot.

Using county lines to create House districts of multiple candidates would make ballots sensible while amping up voters’ voices.

On November 18, a federal court struck down Texas’s newly drawn congressional map, ruling it was “likely racially discriminatory.” According to the court, the map diluted the political power of Black and Latino voters, a clear warning sign of racial gerrymandering.
