BREAKING NEWS: First PR Bill in the Mountain West Introduced

Electoral reform is no longer theoretical. It is gaining ground.

Historic election reform is moving forward in Wyoming and Voting Rights Foundation is proud to have played an educational role in shaping the conversation.

Senate File 114 would restore counties as the foundation of Wyoming’s state House districts. Instead of convoluted single-member districts that invite gerrymandering, the proposal creates multi-member districts, eliminating gerrymandering for good.

Instead of politicians fighting over where lines were drawn, people would be represented by values and the party they choose. This makes the game fair for everyone and ensures voters choose their politicians not the other way around.

The bill advanced through first reading in the Wyoming Senate on a decisive 27–4 vote. It has now been referred for further study during interim committee hearings.

This marks the first time in the American West that a state legislative chamber has moved forward, on a recorded vote, with a plan designed to make election results proportional to voters’ choices.

For months before the bill was introduced, VRF was on the ground and online educating voters about the power of proportional representation. When the legislation was filed, we provided key testimony and educated lawmakers on the pros and cons of their proposals.

This is proof positive that by educating Wyoming voters on the problems and possible solutions, they took their future into their own hands to change their election system for the better.

Beyond ending gerrymandering, this reform would simplify elections and cut costs. County clerks testified that they would need fewer ballots if everyone in the county had the same choices for the Wyoming House, cutting costs for elections.

Voting Rights Foundation will continue providing the research, education, and strategic support needed to move reforms like this forward across the country.
